Landscapes are some of the most sought after pictures by people of all walks of life. But what defines a good landscape shot? The answer could be quite subjective based on the viewer and what makes them feel a certain way.
Realistically we all love landscapes because they invoke some sort of emotion. This could be a feeling of peace, longing, joy, or even a reminder of memories past. Many of the landscape photos that I take are commonly visited locations. So you may have been to a few of these places! Especially if you live near Moab, Utah…
But when I choose a location to photograph my first reaction is to capture the view from my perspective. That is what creates a variety of shots of sometimes the same location. We all have a different perspective on the world and we like to view the land from that perspective to create that emotional image.
The Beauty of Nature and Landscapes:
When I view a scene, I typically am attracted to patterns and shapes. I love how different textures created in nature complement each other perfectly to create a balance. This balance is what some may call beauty. This beauty is inherent in every aspect of nature.
I often believe that nature’s main goal is to create beauty. Any survival tactic or trait that the natural world creates in order to sustain itself is typically one we find beautiful. Consider the spines on a cactus and the way that it flowers to propagate more cacti. The spines are an adaptation to a severe survival condition. As humans we find these lovely and alluring.
So when I am out on an adventure I don’t go out with the intent to find beauty. I leave my mind open to allow beauty to show itself. For me, as an artist, that is how I choose which locations and subjects will be captured. The ones that speak to me and show me their beauty.
